If you saw the newspaper today, or read the online version, you may have read the article by the Associated Press that, according to the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD), the total of gay characters on both television and cable is on the rise.
The study reviewed 97 scripted programs–so this isn’t even counting the unscripted, so-called reality shows–and found that this upcoming season reflects an uptick of 2.9 percent of actors appearing on prime-time netword dramas and comedies. Not that there’s an overwhelming majority or anything. Gay characters still only make up 4.4 percent of the total.
“Where are we on TV?” is also a measure of sorts of GLAAD’s efforts to make sure that representation of gay characters is accurate and true-to-real life and not merely rehashing old stereotypes.
