U.S. Army Corps of Engineers officials said a blue-green algae bloom found in the New York portion of the Allegheny Reservoir could be harmful to humans and pets who come in contact with the algae.
The Corps of Engineers Pittsburgh District investigated the bloom after being notified by the New York State Department of Health on Aug. 30. The Corps said the bloom was found in Quaker Bay near the Friends boat launch ramp and in a one-mile long a stretch of the Allegheny Reservoir directly downstream of the bay.
The New York State Department of Health and the Seneca Nation also are involved in the response. Signs are being posted to notify the public of the health risks associated with blue-green algae. Water monitoring will continue.
The Corps said blue-green algae can generate toxins that can impact human, pet, livestock and fish health. It can cause allergic-type reactions, skin irritations, and in severe cases liver or nervous system damage.
