Fall Fastbreak – Corry

Corry Beavers
Boys
Coach (season, record): Chad Sutton (3rd season, 8-36)
2010-11 overall record: 6-16
2010-11 region record (place): 1-13 (eighth)
2010-11 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Aaron Cressley, Jared Mosher, Chris Haenel
Top returning players: Devin Taydus, Mitchell Burrows, Ryan Sheets
Assistant coaches: Mike Schrecengost, Mark Chase
Outlook: Corry started to turn things around last winter improving from two wins the year before to six in the 2010-11 season. The Beavers will look to take the next step this year under third-year coach Chad Sutton and reach the .500 mark. The last time Corry finished a season at .500 or better was the 2003-04 season in which the Beavers went 16-9. Corry lost several talented players to graduation including all-region second-team selection Jared Mosher along with Aaron Cressley and Chris Haenel. The Beavers will look to the senior leadership of Devin Taydus and Mitchell Burrows. The two are returning starters along with junior Ryan Sheets. The other two spots and the bench will be competed for in camp. Corry has a strong sophomore class that could compete for playing time along with seniors Jacques Rougeau, Justin Nollinger, John Cragg and Ryan Volz. Region 7 isn’t the easiest region to rebuild in but the Beavers will have to get used to the high level of play quickly. Corry starts the season with a rivalry game against Union City before jumping right into the region schedule against Central Tech and General McLane. If the Beavers can get some help from the lower levels this season, they could get near the .500 mark.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Sarah Grab (4th season, 39-31)
2010-11 overall record: 14-8
2010-11 region record (place): 7-7 (tied for fourth)
2010-11 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AAA playoffs.
Top players lost: Emily Greer, Meghan Carney, Tabitha Jaggi, Kristen Dennis
Top returning players: Miranda Cummings, Laura Curtis, Morgan Haibach, Brittany Zajac, Hannah Kondrlik
Assistant coach: Kyle Jewell
Outlook: Corry is hoping to avoid a rebuilding season but it will be tough this winter. The Beavers lost four starters to graduation including all-region first-team pick Emily Greer and second-team selection Tabitha Jaggi. Meghan Carney and Kristen Dennis are also gone, leaving numerous holes for Corry to fill. Miranda Cummings is a returning starter and will be counted on as a senior leader. Coach Sarah Grab will have several upperclassmen looking to contribute. Laura Curtis, Morgan Haibach, Brittany Zajac and Hannah Kondrlik are a few of the upperclassmen fighting for playing time along with a few freshmen and sophomores. With a strong junior class of seven girls, the Beavers are looking to bounce back this year after barely missing the postseason last winter. While Corry will be in transition from last year’s team regarding players, the rest of the region is going through some changes in coaching staffs. If the Beavers can develop some chemistry in camp, they could jump on a few teams trying to learn new systems and grab one of the four playoff spots available in the region.
