Fall Fastbreak – Lakeview

Lakeview Sailors
Boys
Coach (season, record): Gary Burke (12th season, 163-105)
2010-11 overall record: 15-7
2010-11 region record (place): 7-3 (second)
2010-11 playoff results: Lost 48-47 to Mercyhurst Prep in the District 10 Class A quarterfinals.
Top players lost: Jeff Kepner, Lucas Reddick, Marshall McKean, Jake Philson, Michael Brown
Top returning players: Derek Giovengo, Dalton Boggs, Casey Greggs
Assistant coaches: Larry Boggs, Dale Walker, Kevin Persch, Dave Stankovich, Jay Carlson, Bill Beith, Bob Urey, Steve Aden, Gary Rose, Jeff Allay
Outlook: Lakeview was seconds from an upset of Mercyhurst Prep last winter and will need some help to get back to the postseason. The Sailors lost Jeff Kepner, Lucas Reddick, Marshall McLean, Jake Philson and Michael Brown to graduation. With a strong group gone, coach Gary Burke turns to Derek Giovengo, Dalton Boggs and Casey Greggs to lead this year’s squad. Giovengo provides senior leadership from the point guard position, while juniors Boggs and Greggs are two-year starters. The trio drained 98 3-pointers last season and make up a formidable offense. Coty Gander and Brandon Rice are two underclassmen looking to step up and fill in some holes this winter. Lakeview will be quicker this year and have plenty of team speed, but a lack of an inside presence could be an issue.

Girls
Coach (season, record): Tiffany Kress (2nd season, 1-21)
2010-11 overall record: 1-21
2010-11 region record (place): 0-12 (seventh)
2010-11 playoff results: Did not qualify for the District 10 Class AA playoffs.
Top players lost: Kelli Stringer, Brynn King
Top returning players: Cassie Legal, Rachel McKean, Kyleigh Custer, Casey Stringer
Assistant coaches: Lonna Fischer, Robin Legal, Taylor Kress, Cindy Troy
Outlook: Lakeview is still in rebuilding mode and will need to trust in coach Tiffany Kress’ system this winter. The Sailors won only one game last season and lost Kelli Stringer and Brynn King to graduation. The good news for Lakeview is the return of numerous players. Seniors Cassie Legal and Kyleigh Custer provide senior leadership, while Rachel McKean and Casey Stringer are top returners. Stephanie Adams, Chelsea Davis, Lindsey Foster, Samantha George, Mariah Kasbee, Samantha riddle, Alex Ruediger, Jazmyne Sasse and Sami Scott all saw some varsity action last year and could contribute. Lakeview is looking for someone to step up this year and provide the leadership and intensity that each team needs. As the season goes on, if the Sailor start buying into the system, they could be a surprising team.
